Editor’s note: The following poem was inspired by Maya Angelou’s, Weekend Glory. Its themes of connection and cultural identity deeply resonate with my own journey. In this poem, I explore the interplay of privilege and purpose, reflecting on what truly matters. I hope it inspires you to contemplate your own connections and the shared light within us all. 💸
In the quiet moments, embrace the pause,
Reflect on the gifts you’ve received,
and honor those who stood by your cause.
A roof overhead, a warm meal to share,
It doesn’t take much to appreciate
the everyday comforts that fill the air.
Look to the voices unheard,
and the faces long unseen.
The struggles of others, the weight of each word,
the burden of shattered dreams.
Understand your privilege, the light that you hold—
A chance to uplift, to be brave and bold.
In every shared moment,
and every bond we weave,
lies the strength of connection—
but first you must believe.
Each promise we nurture, each memory we share,
creates a foundation of love,
that will always be there.
For privilege is a map, although routes aren’t the same,
a journey for some, while for others, a game.
Let empathy guide you, let compassion ignite,
As you walk through this world,
let your heart be the light.
So stand for the voiceless,
lend strength to the meek.
Whenever you lack direction,
know it’s connection we seek.
To understand privilege is to rise and extend.
You’ve been chosen,
and it’s your birthright to shine—
but also to help others win.
